Social distancing doesn't have to be boring!
In these monthly conversations, we dive deep into one fantastic film that we all watch ahead of time. Films are selected by members of the club from a list prepared by the club's leader, award-winning filmmaker Katherine Fairfax Wright. Katherine also provides insightful context into how the film fits into the wider world of cinema, both in terms of history and technique. It's like a book club, but for movies.
We watch everything from highbrow (Paths of Glory, All About My Mother) to high quality lowbrow (Gold Finger, The Fifth Element) and everything in between. So grab a glass of wine and get ready to take a deep dive into some of cinema's greatest works!
Conversations take place over Zoom; a link to the Zoom meeting will be sent to club members before each session (Thursdays at 8:00pm Eastern / 5:00pm Pacific). Sessions last roughly 60 minutes.
Upcoming schedule
8pm, August 13 (Thursday): Abre Los Ojos + Vanilla Sky. Alejandro Amenábar's 1997 Spanish masterpiece Abre Los Ojos touches on themes of vanity, love, memory, and the mind, all wrapped in beautifully composed imagery. We'll also talk about Vanilla Sky, Cameron Crowe's 2001 American remake starring Tom Cruise. Penelope Cruz delivers fantastic performances in both films, but the two directors' versions of the story differ in fascinating ways.
Bio: Katherine Fairfax Wright
Katherine is an award-winning director and cinematographer, whose filmography includes both documentary and narrative features. Her 2012 film Call Me Kuchu premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and won awards including the Teddy Award for Best Documentary and Best Foreign Feature at Hot Docs.
