This workshop offers a compassionate guide to becoming an ally. The skills of effective allyship have always been needed – and now is the time to take responsibility for our own learning to support our racialized family, friends and colleagues. This interactive and engaging workshop will give you an opportunity to learn about the ways that bias impacts our thoughts and behaviors and the tools to challenge bias in ourselves and others.

This workshop will cover:

  1. Understanding the experience and science of bias 
  2. Identifying and interrupting our own bias
  3. Managing mistakes and making amends
  4. Managing guilt, discomfort and difficult conversations

Attendance will be capped at 30 so as to facilitate open dialogue and conversation.

50% of proceeds will be donated to Colin Kaepernick’s Legal Defense Fund.

Your Facilitators

Understanding Bias is a co-production of Gush and Harmony @Work. The workshop will be led by two of Harmony @Work's expert facilitators, Rima Dib and Lisa Zimmerman.


Rima Dib 

Rima Dib is an Arab-Canadian raised in a multi-ethnic, multi-racial and multi-faith family – making diversity an important part of her identity as well as life’s work. She has been a professional public speaker, educator and facilitator speaking widely on issues of bias and inclusion in the Canadian and international contexts for over 15 years. Rima is a skillful storyteller and highly engaging presenter with a unique ability to connect to her audience, inspiring them to think differently about the world around them.

As an expert in anti-bias and intercultural communication, Rima has designed and delivered educational programs and co-authored publications aimed at helping individuals, organizations and businesses achieve meaningful changes in their lives and workplace culture while being proactive in addressing bias. Rima is a highly sought after speaker who has delivered thought-provoking keynote addresses to large audiences across institutions as well as numerous media appearances as an expert on unconscious bias.

 

Lisa Zimmerman

Lisa Zimmerman is a Jewish Canadian psychotherapist (registered) with 15 years of experience working as a facilitator and presenter. 

Most recently, Lisa managed equity programming for  the Indigenous Reconciliation Group, an organization that provides training across Canada on Indigenous history in Canada and understanding culture, bias and racism.  Lisa specializes in addiction and trauma and has developed emotion-focused and meditation workshops for a range of audiences. She is also a clinical supervisor at Saint Paul University for their Masters of Counselling students.
